smacking

I'm reading a parenting book at the moment (a very good one) that's super keen on 'spanking'. Just wondering...

Parents.

1. Do you smack your kids?
2. Would you continue to smack your kids if it became really odious culturally (like legally questionable)

I don't want a big debate. Just want to know what people are thinking.

My answers:
1. Yes
2. No

  1. I'm not a parent but I really appreciate having been smacked. So I'll smack my kids. Regardless.

  2. No.

    No.

When I raised this on my blog, I had something like 95 comments! It's a touchy subject.

  4. 1. Yes. But mostly because my husband had the final say and he wasnted us to smack, but only when I could see that Jack was going to respond to a smack, and only with warning. In only a short period of time, we have seen that it has worked well, combined with other forms of discipline.

    2. Unsure. I won't smack in public anyway because some people are opposed to it.

  5. We occasionally smack, but usually only our youngest. The other two respond to very clear time outs far better.

  6. Michael J - that's a bad pun - I assume it was unintended.

I don't have kids but I think my answers would probably be:
    1. Yes (sometimes kids just have to realise that the consequences of their actions are literally painful)

    2. Not in public - there's already enough people getting others charged with assault for this.
