Dear World.

Let's stop using the word journey as a metaphor.

It's old. It's vomit inducing.

Your kid is starting school. Let's not call it a 'learning journey'.

You have a cold. Why would you call it a 'journey'?

You're getting married (congratulations!). Please don't tell me that you've found a travel mate for the 'journey of life'.

Have mercy on me. Find a fresh metaphor or just say it as it is.

Sign my petition.

Together we can make the world a better place.

  1. It's big in the health world too. We now talk about the patient's "journey" through the hospital system.
I agree. Enough is enough. I'll sign...

  2. Dear Simone.

Thankyou for your feedback. Here at the World we are constantly striving to keep language new, fresh and exciting for you.

We're sorry that on this occasion you found this metaphor to be over-used. We have agents looking into the matter as we speak. We shall endeavour to phase this out of the language. There are many methods at our disposal, including blog posts, disparaging looks and world-weary sighs.

However please understand that language does take time to change, so please don't feel too disappointed if you don't see results straight away. Changing the way people speak is like a ... extended period of travelling.

All the best for your future language encounters.

    Yours sincerely
    World

  3. I heard someone studying at a theological college talk about their college journey today. I almost needed to reach for a bucket!
