it's not [greed/materialism/irresponsible use of money] if it involves a musical instrument

Tomorrow, amongst many other things, we are buying a trombone. Every household should have at least one. For the next 6 months, we'd like to have two.

We are buying a Bach TB301 Advanced Student model. Andrew and I are looking forward to playing duets with Nathan.

  1. I've heard of duelling banjos before, but trombones??! That's sliding twice as far...;-)

  2. Sounds fantastic! Before the fact, at least.

    Have you consulted the neighbours?

  3. Um... No.

Nathan is in year 5 and started playing this year. He has a school instrument at the moment but needs his own next year. There is a good sale on, so we are getting in early... but not returning the school trombone just yet!

  4. Are you sure you wouldn't rather a bassoon? I'll do you a good deal on one.

  5. nope. not interested. fiddly things! brass all the way!

[son #2 wants a flute or clarinet next year. how do I respond to that? I think we need a french horn in the family! or a trumpet at least!]

  6. My little brother learned the trombone when we were growing up. Painful in the early days but better as time went on.
What about a saxophone for J?

  7. No. Not a fan. And too expensive.

  8. We've had a violin this year. Quite painful, but duetting (is there such a word?) with the only other instrument in the house - a wooden recorder - did help, both with motivation and with pitch!

  9. It's only greed if you never play it. I have four different fretted instruments sitting on stands beside my desk and I only feel un-greedy if I play each of them at least once a week :) It would be greed if I was to buy a trombone, though, as I can't even produce a note out of one.

  10. Stick to your guns, Simone. Many will come by offering more hip, more sleek, more trendy instruments. In truth I'd respect you a bit less if this post were about a saxophone. Go the trombone.

  11. Bagpipes always get a reaction. They're great at parties. Hard to sing to though.
