What would you do if...

... you child's teacher sent home a workbook she had made that had a swear word in it?

Yep. I did.

  1. Ouch...

What level of swear was it?
And do you know the parents?

  2. You did what???? At my kids' school that would be a HUGE drama because the parents would have kittens. At the school I went to as a kid, there would probably be a "ho-hum". Context? Was it a word you personally used or part of a song you didn't write? Was it a "bad" swear word? Age of the kids you sent it home with? Remember, even now the world is still spinning. Mistakes are made by all of us.

  3. I cut and paste a song from internet. No no no no!!!

    The letter f was involved.

Chidren aged 9-12 (year 5-7) were given the booklet. 24 pages.

Entirely accidental. It was the last page I did. I finished at midnight last night. Clearly I was tired.

I've just called the principal. We're doing a book recall tomorrow. She says not to say why. I'm waiting for parents to start calling.

  4. You'll be fine. That's completely reasonable. The book is being recalled. Unlikely that most of the kids will even check all the words. It's cut and paste - we all know that kind of thing could happen. It's an older age group. If you'd been some kind of arrogant idiot of and typed in the word yourself in a song you made up, that would be a series incident. This is just an accident. It'll all be okay in the end.

  5. When they bring them in, just get a black text and cross out the word, then send it back out with the kids :)

I watched Flight of the Navigator with my kids (7,5 & 3) the other night. It's a G-rated movie (from 1986). There was 2-3 swears in there that I wasn't expecting.

It happens, kids can deal. The parents are more the problem (by year 5, I'd suggest any kids who haven't had an F-bomb dropped on or by them is so sheltered they'll have caught fire when they read a swear in your songbook, incinerating the book along with them, so they shouldn't be a problem at all).

  6. Thanks. You are helping me to feel better.

  7. Sorry. That should be "serious incident" and "idiot and" with no "of". See - mistakes happen!

  8. Don't worry!! If you've called the principal then she can honestly say that it was an accident as you'd called her before there were any parent complaints (if any). As a parent I'd understand a mistake but be more bothered if it was intentional. I can remember an incident where our minister used a not-so-nice word entirely by accident in the middle of a sermon - it was an accident - they happen!

  9. I had a three year old at work today tell me repeatedly to 'shut the f*** up' - I tried working on some different language skills

  10. At least you realised the mistake. I agree it would have been a lot worse if you hadn't noticed it before parents started calling... These things happen, now that it's happened once I'm pretty sure you won't make the same mistake again. Hope the Nikko pen corrections go well :)
