recipe for a headache

Ingredients:
100 9-10 year old
100 descant recorders
small classroom
rainy day

Method:
1. Divide children into 4 roughly equal groups
2. Place one group of children into classroom
3. Give each child a recorder
4. Close classroom windows to keep out the rain
5. Tell children to play recorder (kids should work individually or in groups on whichever piece they are up to)
6. Endure for half and hour
7. Dismiss group 1 and repeat with groups 2, 3 and 4.

Headache guaranteed.

  1. That sounds truly awful, Simone. I think the method is a reasonable one. It's the repetition that causes the problem. Time to do some PE I think!

  2. Another good reason not to become a classroom teacher, especially not a music teacher.

  3. Oh, oh, oh! I can hear it now! Argh!
As a vocalist and wind player I think one of the worst things to do (in musical terms) is to give small children, with no real interest in learning to play, recorders! It's a lovely instrument; why do people have to kill it!
