This is me being patient.

Okay. So there's this bluetack that you've coloured with a significant amount of red biro ink, worked into a ball, and left in the sun for a couple of months. You come back to play with it and find it's become really sticky. It gets all over your fingers. You try to wash it off but water doesn't remove it. What do you do?

  1. rub with oil (canola, olive - whatever you have in the kitchen)

  2. another idea - rub with citrus juice (we have some commercially made stuff called 'de-solv-it' for sticky spot and stain removal, which is citrus based so I assume straight citrus should do a similar job)

  3. Peanut butter. But if you haven't got it off by now, then you're probably in a melted down!

  4. It wasn't me. It was Joel.

He had a very good method of getting it off his fingers - he rubbed it into the carpet.

  5. Should have rubbed it into his brother's hair - that's what my kids would have done.

  6. So you need to get it out of both his fingers and the carpet? I would look up my "Spotless" book for advice....not that their advice is always effective but it makes me feel as though I have consulted an expert.

  7. And could I just add that I find it interesting that none of your male readership has replied to this post....

  8. Ok, Karen, I'll bite:

My bet would have been on putting it in the freezer ... but I guess that's probably not going to work wtih either fingers or carpet...

  9. I think you might be onto something there actually. I have heard that putting ice onto chewing gum can harden it all up as a first step to removal from whatever it is stuck too...

  10. That would be "stuck to..." (spelling error correction).

So I just looked up Spotless to see what it said, and the opening line on getting sticky Blu tack out of carpet was "Removing Blu-tack from carpet is very difficult." But putting ice onto it was step one in a highly complicated process involving ice, careful cutting with scissors so that you don't wreck the carpet fibres, talcum powder, and dry cleaning fluid. I imagine that adding red ink to the scenario would increase the complexity even further...

  12. You know, I have no idea if it works for blue tac, but if you get wax in the carpet you can put paper towel down on it and iron it - the wax melts and the towel absorbs it (even newspaper works - yes you can iron paper). However, start with the iron low, because if the carpet has nylon in it you can melt the carpet too!
