I'm as patriotic as the next person, but really, when did we become a nation of flag-wavers? They are everywhere today. Hanging off balconies, draped across fences, five stuck on each car (except ours). I saw a man walking past our place in an Australian flag hat, shirt and shorts. Australia Day, yes, but way too much.
The only flags I saw today were on cars. And I found myself wondering where/how to get one of them for our car. It won't get as far as action. Too busy finishing organisation for oldest child's first day of Prep. Eek.
ReplyDeletehope it goes well. At least you'll have a new uniform for her to put on. Micah has a new lunch box. That's all!
ReplyDeleteI was surprised by the patriotism of our neighbours. Only to discover the flags come free when you spend $x on booze.
ReplyDeleteMaybe less patriotic and more into free stuff.
Hooray for no school aged kids in our family (brother just finished). To celebrate we are taking two weeks at the beach.
I was also weirded out by the flags. It just seems...wrong somehow. Young men with purpose-made flag capes and flag hats with flags poking out of their backpacks. And it always looks like they're up to no good, doesn't it? Like they're off to get completely trashed and cause trouble. (which may have something to do with Milika's comment)
ReplyDeleteDave and I have been discussing this very phenomenon! We think that it is becoming a real statement, more than ever before - and it's only (in my opinion) been such a big thing since those lebanese riots in Sydney a few (?) years ago.
