When I was growing up we used to cover our exercise books in brown paper. When Contact came out it was used for our textbooks which normally did all 4 of us over a 6 year period.
If you want to recycle said books into the recycling bin, just rip off the covers; works for hardcover books (like old diaries) too.
Now I use Contact/Cover-It for paperbacks that I know I want to keep to give them a bit of extra protection from knocks, spills and general tatting of the edges. It also helps when leading books out to others as it's normally harder for them to bend the covers accidentally.
