[to be released later this year on cd 'Never Alone']
reaching down from the sky
earth embraced in mercy
love from heaven: a child
born one winter’s night
angels praise from on high
nations gather round him
rich and poor at his feet
kneeling by his crib
don’t close your eyes
creation’s hope fulfilled this day
heaven and earth collide
god is by our side
don’t close your eyes
hold every moment, come what may
prophets and kings of old
this day foretold
oh humble, watch and wonder!
oh humble, watch and wonder!
tonight.
princes, lay down your crowns
let your towers tumble
join your hands with the poor
christ the Lord is here
god has shown us his way
toppling thrones and kingdoms
lifting lowly up high
joyfully they sing!

Looking forward to hearing it. It's been a while since a new Christmas carol has eclipsed "Come-on, ring those bells", but I think you may have done it!
ReplyDeleteI particularly appreciate the tight link between the Christmas narrative and Daniel 7. (Actually further reflection there's heaps of Bib. Theol. packed in there - and it still sounds lyrical!)
Not so sure about the 'winter's night'. Is that to keep it within the carol tradition?
thanks Dan. I wasn't consciously thinking daniel 7, but if you can see it there I won't object!
ReplyDelete'Winter' is a bit romantic. But if you hate it, be assured that my first draft was much worse. I think I described it as a 'lonely winter's night'! Ugh!
Lovely - looking forward to the album
ReplyDeleteSo is 'Never Alone' going to be the a Simone 'best of' - maybe with some poetry/blog post readings interspersing the songs?
ReplyDeleteI think the brown skirt post below deserves a spot on the cd... but Philip's a bit picky about these things. You'll have to wait and see!
