Flourish workshop 1: Hosanna

Listen to this song.

What do you think? Good? Bad? Indifferent?

Tell me in the comments.

  1. It's not the worst thing I've heard, but doesn't have much to recommend it. Great that she's opted to use some biblical imagery, shame how she doesn't appear to understand it. The 'coming on clouds' motif is either Dan 7, Jesus being given authority, or parousia, Jesus bringing judgment. Doesn't sound like what she's singing about.

The video was instructive. An offensively large number of US flags, but the most interesting thing was the way she had her mic stand set too high, so she had to tilt her head back to sing into it. In other words, the stage setup was deliberately preventing her from actually looking at the crowd, ever. Crazy. People don't get that corporate singing is corporate. No wonder they all were busy ignoring each other too.

  2. I felt like it needed more content for something over 6 minutes. But was it meant to be corporate singing, or a concert? Because that would change my expectations of it.

  3. I think this is a better version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQGJdTpMUcU

I think it's got a great tune. Very catchy.

The words are OK, but not as clear as I'd like.

I like to listen to it. But don't really enjoy singing it much. Wouldn't choose it at church.

  4. Listening to this song I really love it. Except I feel sinful/old/faithless for not being able to share the vision of verse 2. But apart from that, great.

Watching it is something else entirely. I worship those performing, feel sexually attracted to nice looking women moving to the music, and generally wish I was just listening.

The USA imagery is (I think..) there because the video comes from a tour there. And it actually serves a great purpose possibly for an American audience. There's plenty of imagery that promotes pride, but then in the bridge where they sing "break my heart for what breaks yours" the images change to show destitution, suffering, prejudice, and how lost a place the US is in parts.

  5. The video is geo-blocked, but I listened via Spotify. It seems a little familiar - I'm thinking the youth group did at a recent service.

I don't mind it; musically, it's a good song, and lyrically I want to like it, but I'm not a fan of the 2nd verse, and honestly, the 'Hosanna' line feels a little like Christianese - what does it mean?

  6. I enjoyed listening to the song. Although when I looked up the words they didn't do much for me. I wouldn't really like to sing it myself. The lyrics don't really connect well to each other (in a logical, flowing sense). The words are OK, but are quite vague.
