note to self

must stop reading american blog posts on parenting and marriage.

  1. Interesting note to self - or 'not to self'! (as I originally typed!)...can I ask why?

I read a post on marriage yesterday that just made me feel pathetic - and decided that culturally I was to different to find it helpful...was it something like that? I.e is it cultural differences?

  2. I think partly cultural, partly difference in my piety and theirs, and partly my ungodliness.

I often get annoyed at things I read (far too annoyed - which is why I shouldn't read them). The post I read the other day was one on how we must discipline our children - and I agree that we must. But it really got to me how the woman writing told us how everyone says her kids are so well behaved and then went on to talk about how awful everyone else's kids are - throwing tantrums in shopping centres etc etc... It just seemed so high and mighty. We all have bad shopping experiences from time to time. I think when we see a mum struggling with her kids in public we should make as many excuses for her as we possibly can - the kids have had a big day, they're tired, this is unusual behaviour for them, the kids have trickier personalities than mine do ... whatever, just try to be generous and not judge when we don't know the situation.

    [end of rant]

Parenting is not straight forward. It's wonderful and heartbreaking and encouraging and disappointing and everything else that life and love are. And the playing field is not at all level. We need to be careful.
