song ideas for new little kids cd

We're starting the think about making a new little kids cd in the 'Very Very Very Big God' and 'J is for Jesus' series.

Any thoughts on topics for songs for this age group?

  1. Rescue songs. God rescues us through Jesus. God's rescue of his people in the OT stories. Rescue stories: Jonah, Rahab, Moses, Ruth, Judges. Lots of rescuers and lots of ways God rescues us. The lost sheep.

  2. Less emphasis on BIG. More emphasis on GRACE.

    1. Just for the record, I've never written a song with 'big' in it. I don't think I have, anyway.

What does it mean that God is big, anyway?

  3. I like the idea of telling stories in the songs too. Or even some really basic scripture verses that can be sung to music. I know Colin Buchanan has that corner of the market quite well covered, but perhaps not so much for the really little ones... In our church kids programs, they're really big on singing memory verses but I struggle to find anything that suits the 18 month to 3 year olds...

  4. I was going to suggest something silly like "dispensationalism" but I am put to shame by everyone's thoughtful responses. I love them all! Now you just have to pick... :)

  6. Dealing with fears or worries is good like the "Don't Be AFraid of the Dark" idea on J is for Jesus. I have sung that song soooo many times to my 4 year old!

  7. Songs that help kids suffer; prayer song for kids based on the Lord's Prayer; stuff that is robust and strong based on creeds and/or catechisms; a song that would help kids process/pray through the fact that people they love don't love and follow Jesus; songs that praise Jesus and tell him that we love him without being wet (a hard ask!). OK, stopping now... :) Love your work. xJ
