My Heart Delights In Christ (draft 2)

I think this song needs a chorus. I haven't written one yet but I've cut a line from the second half to create a "pull". An unbalanced verse needs resolution - hopefully a chorus will provide it. (I haven't yet tried to fix all the issues you pointed out in the last draft. And I may have created more!)

My Heart Delights In Christ

1. My heart delights in Christ my lord
my lips rejoice to sing
my mouth and tongue wake to proclaim
the glories of my king.
For he has sought me, reconciled
this guilty one he calls his child
my heart delights in Christ.

2. My heart delights in Christ my lord
his wonders fill my mind
The king of all rose from his throne
My sullen heart to find.
His voice brings comfort to my soul
The cold and broken, warm and whole
my heart delights in Christ.

3. My heart delights in Christ my lord
And I will sing his praise
The weight of guilt, the strength of sin
are nothing to his grace.
Forgiven, blameless, pardoned, free
I'll live with him eternally
My heart delights in Christ.

  1. I like the vibe, Simone. But if you're looking to do something more, then my suggestion is specificity.

I've got a theory that no song should be able to be sung in every context. Too generic means too bland, too easy to tune out of.

So my question is, what are you aiming at? You're in the singular - are we then singing to each other to spur each other on (ecclesiology)? Or speaking the gospel to outsiders (evangelism)? Or girding our loins (discipleship)? Or...pick any other theological buzzword?

Never Alone works so well because it integrates the incarnation with the indwelling Spirit. (Plus great tune, brilliant lyrics etc, of course ;-)

    My 2 crotchets, anyway.

  2. What I am aiming to do in this song is to capture a particular feeling I had a few weeks ago. [This is not my usual thing when writing.] I felt that my heart was 'full' of christ. The truth of the gospel gripped me and I felt excited and content and happy in the fact of sins forgiven.

Does that come across? There's two directions I could take the chorus - 1. joy in no one else but christ. 2. joy in sins forgiven.

    Any thoughts?

  3. (you've lost a line in stanza 3 there)

Yes, it certainly does come across. Better than the bland cliches that you so often get in similar attempts. I guess I'm looking for a way into sharing/appropriating that experience.

As for your two options - I think you cover number 2 with the verses. And I'd like to see you have a shot at number 1 - I can't immediately think of a modern song that does that well ... except of course for In Christ Alone (which I fear is getting overworked and needs an ally!). Yes, there's Nothing But... but in spite of its tagline it doesn't do as much of this as you'd expect. So go for it!

(another idea that comes to mind, given you're a CSL fan...something about how joy comes into being?)

Anyway, I wish you many successful cafe days, particularly with the extra load you'll have looking after the Invalid Beloved!

  4. Version 6 - With a refrain. I'll try to write a better chorus tomorrow.

    1. My heart delights in Christ my lord
    my lips rejoice to sing
my mouth and tongue wake to proclaim
    the glories of my king.
For he has sought and reconciled
the guilty one he calls his child

My heart delights in Christ my Lord
    There's joy in him alone.

    2. My heart delights in Christ my lord
    his wonders fill my mind
The king of all rose from his throne
    My sullen heart to find.
His voice brings comfort to my soul
The cold and broken, warm and whole.

My heart delights in Christ my Lord
    There's joy in him alone.

    3. My heart delights in Christ my lord
And I will sing his praise
The weight of guilt, the strength of sin
    are nothing to his grace
The darkness gone, the light has come
All things are new within his love

My heart delights in Christ my Lord
    There's joy in him alone.
