Good news, bad news

Good news. Joel got into the high school that he applied for.

Bad news. He got in on music entry rather than art entry.

Joel is disappointed. Music entry = no art. Art entry = Art + extra curricula music.

The music department is pretty powerful in this school and they want him (the teachers told me that - he has a nice tone on his bass clarinet). I need to talk to the art teachers and see if they wanted him but got steamrolled by the music dept (quite possible).

This comes at the end of a really tough week. Prayers appreciated.

  2. Oh Simone, that's really tough for Joel. Can he switch later on? Any chance of doing art classes outside school? It's pretty clear he's gifted.

  3. I'm going in on Monday to speak to the art people. It may simply be that they thought he wanted music entry more than art entry - kids normally do, because learning an instrument is generally something that you've invested more in. But we'll see.

  4. It's not possible to do do art and music in QLD high schools anymore? Isn't that a bit like not being able to do both chemistry and physics?

    1. It's just this particular high school and just if you want special entry into the school based on an ability in one or the other. General entry kids chose 2 out of art, music, dance and drama and do them 140 mins per week for a semester each. Specialist kids do only one of them for 210 mins per week and a bit less PE or something else. Not a perfect system.

    2. And he's a specialist entry because you don't live in the catchment area?

  5. Disappointing. Hope you have some joy tomorrow with the art people. Will pray for you all, and I hope that you've been able to recover from the tough past week by enjoying the excitement that is Eurovision. We have missed all the lead up because we have had our church weekend away this weekend (such poor timing, what were they thinking??), but we are looking forward to the final this evening ;)
